Rossetti and Jane Morris at Cartwright Hall Museum

Rossetti and Jane Morris at Cartwright Hall Museum

We went to Cartwright Hall this morning to see Rossetti’s paintings of Jane Morris. I used to do huge pavement drawings many moons ago. Pre-Raphaelites were always a money spinner so I’ve spent many long hours on my hands and knees copying her likeness – poring over her face and her hands with their astonishingly long fingers. Today I found the photographs of her far more interesting than Rossetti’s idealised half likenesses – and the embroidered hanging she’d stitched was intricate, skilful and beautiful.
